Buccinidae - Siphonaliinae: Penion mandarinus (Duclos, 1831) ('mandarin whelk')  

Synonym(s): mandarinus Duclos, 1831 grandis Gray, 1839 dilatatus Reeve, 1847 pastinacea Reeve, 1848 tasmaniensis A. Adams & Angas, 1864 oligostira Tate, 1891 waitei Hedley, 1903 levifida Iredale, 1929 spectandus Iredale & McMichael, 1962.

Typical shell-length 140 mm. Smaller, more rounded and pinker than P. maximus. Lives subtidally and offshore on fine sand and mud.  Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA).  In Tasmania this is a widespread species but seldom beached. Found in shallower water in the S.
